At Tyler B Photography, we understand that a photography session can be quite a challenge. A photography session can be viewed as a stressful or laborious task, but with a little preparation, you can handle the moments before the day and the day itself very easily. As experts in lifestyle, senior, wedding, and family photography, we’ve created a handy checklist to help your session go with as little stress as possible. Follow our checklist about things you should know before your session to make sure the day goes well and you are rewarded with great photos and memories.

Make sure your vision is clear to your photographer
You have to make sure that your professional photographer has the same vision, theme, and idea in mind. If you and your photographer have already spoken of an agreed-upon a theme, idea, and other details, it’s easy for you to figure out the session’s end desire and outcome.

Pick appropriate clothing that fits vision and location
Remember to pick appropriate clothes, shoes, and accessories. If you and your photographer have already agreed on a theme, then it becomes easier for you to figure out the type of clothes, footwear, and accessories to bring to the photoshoot.

Plan ahead
Plan the day in advance so you have a clear idea of what you will begin with and where to finalize the session. Things happen and it is wise to have a plan B. Flexibility is a must as you don’t know what could go wrong. Carry an extra set of clothes and have alternate plans in order to keep everything in motion despite hindrances.

Natural is always better than fake and forced
If something does not look natural after trying it out, do not force it. Stay true to yourself and be who you are. Be comfortable and confident and the rest will just help your vision come to light. You want these photos to be a memory of who you are, be proud of yourself. Attitude is key, make sure everyone is prepped to contribute and not be a hindrance.

Try not to stress!
When you stress, your muscles tend to tense up, this leads to the makings of an awkward photo. You want to be free, confident, and fluid. This makes for a more natural and real photo to help you remember the day or occasion by. You need to lead your family into this stress-free and confident environment in order to get the best results possible.

It is always a perfectly imperfect photo
It is ok if not everyone smiles and looks at the camera at the same time. Think about the subtext and what you want in our vision and try to look at the good side of things. If you are engaged with your family, your eyes will be on each other with a natural smile. It is human nature to be perfectly imperfect. This inherent nature in a human being is beautiful and capturing it in a photograph makes for an endearing memory to remember the day by.

Themed sessions are fun and props are always welcome!
Decide on a fun theme that your family loves and can agree on, this helps you narrow down on clothing options and poses. Props help push the theme forward, incorporate various simple props in your picture in order to add variety.

Know that what you see on Pinterest is not always realistic for you and your family
Pinterest and other social media sites do not paint a realistic image. You need to come to terms with the fact that you might not get a carbon copy of the image you see on such sites. As a matter of fact, you should try to incorporate those ideas into something that works more naturally for you.

Practice posing! Look in the mirror so you know what that move looks like.
You should practice before your session. Go online, check the different poses made by models on magazines and fashion websites, and try to mimic those. In the end, you have to remember, you are the star, be confident, and emote the confidence and emotions you want to see in your photos.

Be willing to try new things, take risks, be confident, and try to incorporate who you are
Relax and put yourself out there. Trust in the photographer and keep a smile on your face. Be true to yourself and remember to portray your true best self in order to get the most beautiful and genuine photos. If you have a talented and professional photographer, not only will you have a wonderful experience but you will also get the best photos.

Remember that time is important
Especially with natural light, you get only a certain amount of natural light time. Remember to be respectful of your allotted time for each session. Some of the best images come during sunrise and sunset and your photographer may have some shoot concepts to use them. Punctuality is important as you want to make the most of the allotted time and you need to respect the professional.

Be mindful that you are working with a creative person and let them do their job
Asking a zillion times for a peek at the raw pictures does not help their creative process. Remember to keep in mind that the raw photos won’t be the final outcome as they need to be retouched and photoshopped. Art takes time so be patient and understanding, don’t try and rush it. Your photographer knows what will look the best, trust them!

Make it be a memorable and enjoyable experience and have fun
Getting professional photos taken of you and your loved ones is a memorable occasion one should cherish. Remember to have fun, laugh, giggle, joke, embrace, kiss, and play around. This will allow the photographer to capture the emotion and true beauty of your family. It brings out who you really are and paints a true picture of your family dynamic. Your photographer will be able to capture this familial love through their lens. You will be able to look back at these photos with nostalgia and fondness, so remember to have fun and enjoy the experience.
